In a recent episode of the ‘Dale Jr Download’ podcast, racing legends Dale Earnhardt Jr and his co-host Mike Davis engaged in a spirited discussion about the potential use of resin to improve racing at Richmond Raceway. At the heart of the debate lies Dale Jr’s belief that resin could add an exciting twist to the racing product at Richmond.

During the podcast, co-host Mike Davis sought clarification from “Pied Piper” of Daytona, asking if the resin application should be limited to specific track parts or spread out. Dale Jr’s response was measured and thoughtful. He acknowledged that an indiscriminate spread of resin throughout the track could lead to unintended consequences, potentially making it difficult for drivers to pass each other. However, he also saw the potential benefits of applying resin strategically.

“If you put it down the wrong way or you put too much down, that will be where everybody runs and you will not be able to pass. So yeah, I think that I think that if Denny and I went to the racetrack with a bucket of resin, I think we can figure out a balance between our two opinions.” Junior chuckled.

The JR Motorsports owner suggested that instead of coating the entire track, they could focus on key sections where the grip was crucial. For instance, they could consider applying resin in the middle of the corner to help drivers accelerate out of the turn with better traction. If done correctly, this approach could create opportunities for drivers to gain a competitive edge, making for more exciting racing.

Mike Davis and Earnhardt Jr also agreed on caution while experimenting with the resin solution. Too much resin or applying it in the wrong places could lead to everyone gravitating to the resin-coated line, effectively making it a single racing line and eliminating overtaking opportunities.

The debate between the 2014 Daytona 500 winner and Hamlin highlighted the complexity of improving racing while maintaining the competitive nature of the sport. It showcased their genuine passion for the sport and a shared commitment to enhancing the racing experience at Richmond Raceway.

As fans eagerly await the results of any potential resin application, one thing is clear: Dale Earnhardt Jr and Joe Gibbs Racing drivers are not just legendary drivers but also thinkers looking to push the boundaries of NASCAR. Whether they arrive at a unanimous solution or maintain different viewpoints, the conversation has ignited a spark of creativity in the racing community, and the anticipation for next year’s race at Richmond Raceway is palpable.
